Concert: Tribute to the American Black Composer "Changed My Name"
Since its founding in 1985, The New South Festival Singers has championed the music of black composers and the folk songs and spirituals of the black experience. For our annual "Tribute to the American Black Composer" concert in 2024, Music Director Lynn Swanson has chosen the deeply moving cantata, "Changed My Name" by Linda Twine. Using traditional songs and composed music the cantata tells the story of seeking freedom through the words of 19th century heroes Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. Dr. Norma Raybon plays the role of Sojourner Truth, and the Reverend Henrietta Andrews plays the role of Harriett Tubman.

Ash Wednesday Prayer and Reflection
Ash Wednesday
On Ash Wednesday, February 17, from 12–2 PM and 4–5 PM St. John will be open for the community for individual prayer and performance of the imposition of ashes in a socially distanced manner.
There is no liturgy or service, but congregants are invited to come to the sanctuary as you are willing and able to administer the ashes and take a moment for quiet prayer. This is meant to be an unprogrammed time for reflection. The following procedures will be in place to keep social distance:
Please enter the church through the breezeway door next to the narthex. An usher will be there to direct you if you have any questions.
Everyone who enters the church must wear a mask for the duration of your visit. Hand sanitizer and extra masks will be provided by the door.
Maintain social distance of at least 6 feet at all times while on church grounds.
In the sanctuary, you may take a Q-tip for self-imposition of ashes. There will be a bin to dispose of used Q-tips.
If you choose to kneel at the altar or sit in the pews in prayer, maintain distance of at least 6 feet from other individuals.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Flipping Contest
It’s time to have some fun with pancakes! Last year, our Fellowship Hall hosted one of our biggest turnouts for our 13th Annual Pancake Race and Dinner. This year, let’s do even better with our very first Pancake Flipping Contest over Zoom. On February 16 at 6 PM and from the comfort of your own home or backyard, we will gather together and have some fun with pancakes.
The Children’s Ministry will provide a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Packet for families. In each Pancake Packet, you will find:
Fun Facts about Shrove Tuesday and how this tradition began 576 years ago!
A “skillet” to decorate and to use to flip the pancakes for the contest
Craft supplies to decorate the skillet
A box of pancake mix to prepare your very own pancake dinner at your house on Shrove Tuesday
You can pick up your packet on Sunday, February 14 from 12–4 PM outside the Sanctuary or Monday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 16, from 10 AM–2 PM.

This is a drive-thru no-contact event. Please keep your windows rolled up at all times to safely enjoy the nativity.

If you wish to make a donation, visit our giving page here.
This year, given the challenges of the pandemic, we are focusing our mission projects on our local community. Specifically, for Bethlehem, we are accepting donations towards Kidz2Leaders, a 10 year old program that works to break the cycle of incarceration by providing stability, opportunity, and a Christian community for children of inmates. Simply select the Bethlehem mission from the dropdown menu on our online giving portal here.
